Top Ten Hosting Company Mistakes

May 13th, 2011 Shane Stafford

Everyone makes mistakes and web hosting companies are no exception to this. Web hosting is an industry where the services offered depend on so many things that can so easily go wrong.

1) Unlimited Space and Bandwidth: Making offers of unlimited space and bandwidth is terribly inane because it is simply not possible to live up to it. There is no viable way for web hosting companies to offer such promises and once the customers start using more resources, the hosts scramble to cope or simply shut down accounts.

2) Promotional Gimmicks: Web hosting companies that rely on gimmicks and marketing surprises are headed for trouble because not every gimmick, or feature ever really "revolutionizes" much of anything.

3) Humor at the Wrong Time: Nobody likes being treated lightly when a problem arises. If there are any major issues, the web hosting company should take it seriously and try to fix it. Dismissing issues are never good for any company.

4) System Redundancy: Servers require redundant power supplies in case things go wrong, as they sometimes will. Even the most expensive generators can go on the brink and cause the customer's datacenters to go down.

5) Claiming Low-end Servers Are Reliable: There are web hosts who get the "most affordable" servers and tout them as the "most reliable" in the market. The thing is if the servers are cheap to the web hosts then they are cheap even for the customers. But, many dedicated servers companies make mistakes of marketing very low-end servers as the best technology in the market.

6) Using Outsourcing Firms: Hiring another company to handle the helpdesk with employees that are not properly trained or competent is a major mistake.

7) Offering Free Trials: There are times when the web hosting company offer free trials but forget to ask for credit card information which could enable them to verify the customers. This leads scammers, spammers and ill-intentioned webmasters who run questionable websites. What happens is that the spammers will login and flood the world with spam leaving the web hosts with nothing but trouble.

8) Guarantees That Are Not Honored: Making money back guarantees should be backed-up with actual actions should the situation warrant it. Many web hosts also have uptime and/or support guarantees. However, when the guarantees are not met or the hosting companies make so many conditions that are impossible to meet, customers will start avoiding them like the plague.

9) Not Having Competent Staff: A company is as good as its employees. But, having employees who are poorly trained, or worse, not at all trained can be quite a reason for keeping customers away. There is nothing more irritating than having an idiot answer your call when you are having major issues with your website.

10) Expanding Too Soon: Many businesses tend to get a swell head when the going gets good and starts to dream of expanding like crazy. There are web hosts who stubbornly believe that they can expand like a balloon even though they have nothing but major issues keeping up with customer orders and technical problems. And, like a balloon they burst.
